2015 Porsche 550 Spyder

This is an extremely special car, and not your ‘average’ Spyder Replica.

The Chassis is purpose built by Universal Products from Tubular steel, to closely resemble the original car, with only minor modifications to the design to either improve safety, or allow for modern donor parts. It features rose-jointed suspension throughout and disk brakes at the front.

The body is made from ISO Standard Fiberglass, not just “chop”, making for a far more uniform surface, stronger panels and a much better finish.

In terms of running gear, again the car has been built to remain as close to the original as possible. It therefore uses a mid mounted, air-cooled Porsche 356 Engine with twin IDF Carburetors. The gearbox/ Transaxle is from the SA-Only VW SP1600, so has longer ratios than the beetle. It uses custom made linkages to make for a very short and precise gear change.

This is a really unique and enjoyable sportscar. A new Rolling chassis from Universal Products would cost around R750k.
